How Long Does It Take for Google Ads To Work?

The question is multi-faceted! Google Ads "work" instantaneously, right? Technically, most Google Ads will start running in about one day – but great return on your campaign is often not seen immediately.

Below, we answer the question of “how long” from multiple angles, helping business owners determine the value of a Google Ads campaign and establish healthy expectations.

How Long Does it Take for Your Google Ads to Start?

According to Google Ads Help, ads are typically reviewed within 1 business day, depending on the complexity of the ad. However, if ads are under review for more than 2 business days, Google recommends contacting their support for more information.

Ads under review feature the status “Under review.” If the ad is approved, the status will be “Eligible.” Denied ads display “Disapproved,” and Google will provide feedback on any particular policy violations, as well as how to rectify the issue.

How Long Does it Take to See ROI From a Campaign?

Some campaigns deliver results overnight, but most require at least two to three months to see ROI. Google Ads is an investment. However, those initial months are not wasted time. During the first few months of an active campaign, your ads are gathering data. This is valuable insight that can be used to optimize your campaign’s future performance.

    Why a few months?

    1. New campaigns have to gather data. Great Google Ads managers spend ample time researching competitors, keywords, etc. before launch. However, new campaigns still gather real-time info on keywords and audiences and other data that will eventually help you improve your targeting, and this takes time.
    2. Google Ads delivers ads based on quality. While Google Ads will deliver your ads initially based on a quality judgement, this will change over time as Google gathers more data on your ads. As Google determines the quality and value of your ad, you may begin to see improvements in performance.

How Can You Improve Your Google Ads Results?

In the first month, start with broad targeting and use campaign data to narrow in your focus over time. Rather than starting with a super specific demographic, start broad and allow audience data to help you narrow your audience.

Next month, assess the performance of your keywords. If you see poorly performing keywords, consider removing them from your campaign. Additionally, identify negative keywords – keywords that you do not want to appear for – and add them to your negative keywords list. Your ad will not appear for keywords on this list.

Finally, as you receive more data, consider creating new ad copy variations to improve results. Over time, use this data to expand your campaigns.
